Ancestry.com founder, Paul Allen, has estimated that the number of users in service and predicts Google+ is about to welcome its 10 millionth member, if not already done so.
Mr. Allen wrote in a post on, "Google + using a sample of 100-200 names, I can accurately estimate the percentage of the total U.S. population that is registered with Google +. Then use that estimated number and proportion of U.S. users for the generation of my global estimates. "
Google still has not released official figures for service use, although anecdotal evidence suggests that demand has been high and some of the most popular users of services are already being followed by tens of thousands of people.
Google has made several failed attempts to launch a social networking service in the past, but the initial response to Google + suggests it will do much better.
In a recent article about Google +, Vic Gondotra, senior vice president of Google's social development, said: "Many of the criticisms of Google +. We are listening and working to resolve. Stay tuned for changes this week."
Google is still some way behind rival social networks. Twitter has more than 300 million users and Facebook last week announced that it has 750 million dollars.
